The High Park fire in Teller County grew to 1,149 acres Sunday morning and is still 10% contained, according to fire incident officials.

The fire is located about 6 miles west of Cripple Creek.

The size increase is because of firing operations as well as winds, with the fire burning in ponderosa pine and grass in the steep rocky terrain with High Park Road to the west and Fourmile Creek to the east, the latest update stated. Firefighters are working to mop up heat sources and secure the edge of the fire, with direct fire response expected from the southeast corner of the fire where it’s most active.

Less wind — about 10-20 mph — is expected on Sunday, according to the Northeast Teller County Fire Protection District, but high fire danger is likely on Monday. Afternoon thunderstorms could bring some gusty, erratic winds on Sunday, but not much rain, the forecast stated.
