Hawaii, Fresno State and Utah will join SDSU and USD with special tribute to Hall of Famer during Saturday's games
You won’t be able to tell the players even with a scorecard in Saturday’s games of the Tony Gwynn Legacy. The players from all six teams participating in the event — co-hosts San Diego State and USD as well as Fresno State, Hawaii, UNLV and Utah — will wear shirts with “Gwynn 19" to honor the Hall of Famer and former SDSU head baseball coach, who died in 2014.
“It’s pretty humbling,” Muno said at the time. “It’s an honor and a privilege to wear No. 19 on my jersey and represent Coach Gwynn and the values he brought to our program. He was drafted in the third round by the Padres following the 1981 season, embarking on a 20-year major league career a year later. Gwynn was a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2007 following a career that included eight National League batting titles, 3,141 hits and a lifetime average of .338, second only to Ted Williams among players whose careers began after 1938.
“We celebrate Tony pretty much everyday,” Martinez said. “The one thing we want to continue to do here at San Diego State is celebrate Tony’s legacy. We talk about him a lot. We talk about Tony’s character. We try to match that character within our program. SDSU also aims to get the offense going after scoring just 3.2 runs a game the first week with a .226 team batting average.Tony Gwynn Legacy, Friday vs. Hawaii, 6 p.m./Saturday vs. Utah, 6 p.m./Sunday vs. Utah, 2 p.m.USD plans to use right-hander Garrett Rennie and left-handers Brycen Mautz and Ian Churchill on the mound this weekend, just as the Toreros did a week ago when they opened the season with three straight wins against Oregon.
