, a keyboardist and composer who died in 2008. Garcia and Saunders had worked together on the album, After Saunders’ death, the piece was discovered by the musician’s son and then later acquired by the collector.
Art historian Steve Cabella, owner of The Modern antiquities shop in California, told the publication he has purchased party pipes from musicians, not so much for their history, but simply for fun. “They’re just funny little things; they have no history to them. No lost story. No lost connections. This is a different object. It’s sort of a holy grail in a lot of ways, because, obviously, when [Jerry] was smoking this pipe, he was playing music at the time and that was where he was getting the spirit from — the creativity from,” Cabella relays.Article contentIt was also reported to Cabella by Saunders’ son that no one but Garcia had used the unit.
