“He really was an asset to Alaska, not just the legal community, but the entire state,” said Matt Peterson, who founded a law firm with former Alaska Chief Justice Craigh Stowers in the mid-1990s. Stowers died Thursday at age 67.

Stowers died on Thursday. Stowers retired in 2020 after 11 years on the court. He was chief justice for three years, from 2015 to 2018. He was a Superior Court judge for five years before becoming a justice.Current Chief Justice Daniel Winfree was on the Supreme Court the entire time that Stowers was a justice.

“They would talk about where they were going to go and take a vacation for a week – some cabin somewhere and maybe down on the water to do some fishing,” Winfree said. “He really was an asset to Alaska, not just the legal community, but the entire state,” Peterson said.in part from the rest of the court in its decision to allow the attempt to recall Gov. Mike Dunleavy to move forward.
