Every Wednesday and Sunday, a group of cold water swimmers meet at various locations along Kingston’s lakefront and submerge in the water.

“The technique” is called Wim Hof, named for its Dutch founder, and involves breath work and movement exercises, followed by immersion in cold water for an allotted period of time. Nerenberg aims for five minutes. “People who do this seem to get less colds and respiratory illnesses, and it seems to help with circulation,” Nerenberg said. “Some people believe it has an anti-depressive effect.
Katelyn Franssen has been swimming in cold water a few times per week in recent months, and on and off for five years.
