But his Oppenheimer is still awfully Christ-like; the enigmas of his character are scrutinized but the basic picture is still that of the superman, the “American Prometheus,” who was essential to unlocking the atom. Whenever Matt Damon turns up as Gen. Leslie Groves, actual director of the Manhattan Project, you might find yourself wondering, “Where’s this guy’s movie?”
Perhaps mythologization is inevitable in this context; perhaps Oppenheimer really is the central figure in human history that the movie makes him out to be. But this leads to dismissive, hackneyed central-casting treatment of the other characters in the scientific drama of the time.Article content The irony is that Nolan’s film does make you both feel and understand the ugly nature of Oppenheimer’s postwar humiliation, once you learn to sort Nolan’s overlapping narrative threads on the fly. But there’s an inherent mismatch between the Los Alamos drama and the story of Oppenheimer’s martyrdom, which is surely of diminishing interest.
