In the 1980s, the Flames and the Oilers were generally two of the strongest teams in the league, and games between them were ordinarily both high-scoring and appallingly violent. This year they managed to get their regular-season acts together credibly enough to finish first and second in the Pacific Division, but both had narrow escapes against mediocre opposition in the first round.
It’s very understandable for the padre to have forgotten Calgary’s losses in 1983, 1984, 1988 and 1991. No doubt he is already working on forgetting the highly entertaining 2022 series, which ended Thursday night with a 5-4 Oilers overtime victory in Calgary. As an Oilers fan, I still can’t account analytically for what happened next — namely, a demented 9-6 Calgary home win in the opening game and then four consecutive Oilers victories. What I would like to tell you — would like to believe — is that the Oilers mystique, which has taken a grand total of one night off in the long history of the Battle of Alberta, proved insurmountable.
Ever since those early days, it has been hard not to see the Flames as the pathetic, imitative younger brother, even when they were better on the ice than the Oilers. And if the Oiler mystique isn’t part of the explanation for how the series panned out, I don’t know what is.
