Three restaurants at Calgary's Sunridge Mall, including The Famous Wok, Edo, and OPA, have been ordered to shut down due to a severe cockroach infestation and numerous food safety violations. Health inspectors discovered both live and dead cockroaches in various life cycles, a lack of pest control records, uncleanliness, and improper food storage practices.

A significant cockroach infestation has led to the closure of three restaurants at Calgary 's Sunridge Mall . The Famous Wok, Edo, and OPA were all ordered to shut down by Alberta health inspectors who discovered both dead and live cockroaches in various life cycles. The closure notices, dated February 6th, stated that the restaurants also failed to provide written records of pest control measures to the inspectors.

The report further detailed a buildup of grease and food debris on the walls and floors of the establishments, violating food preparation and handling regulations. At the Famous Wok, inspectors noted a particularly concerning list of violations. In addition to the cockroach infestation, the floor and walls of the walk-in cooler were covered with bloody juices from stored meats. Other violations included improperly stored partially frozen meats and food items lacking proper temperature controls. The absence of hand washing stations was also cited as a serious concern. All three restaurants were mandated to close immediately and remain shut until they have addressed all the health and safety issues. This includes thorough cleaning, repairs, hiring a pest control company to eradicate the cockroaches, and developing a comprehensive pest management plan for the future.OPA's CEO, Dorrie Karras, attributed the infestation issues to the mall management's responsibility for pest control. She stated that the company had no control over the situation and that it should have been addressed when a previous tenant in the mall experienced a similar issue. In a written statement, Karras emphasized that OPA immediately ceased operations and is collaborating with Sunridge Mall, Alberta Health Services, their franchisee, and the mall-appointed pest control company to rectify the situation. She assured the public that the restaurant would not reopen until all health and safety protocols were met and exceeded
