Sydney’s cocaine consumption has shot back up since it was cruelled by the pandemic lockdowns, with a significant spike in arrests for use or possession of the $350-a-gram drug – beloved by the Harbour City – since lockdowns ended.
Sydney is Australia’s cocaine capital, with usage on the rise after lulls during the pandemic, wastewater testing shows.Of those arrests, a third occurred in the Sydney CBD with Waverley and Randwick councils constituting the bulk of the other arrests. Data shows these arrests were mostly detected in public outdoor spaces and licensed premises.
“Sometimes we get these concentrations at events like festivals but there haven’t been that many events since the pandemic, yet police are still managing to detect these quite high volumes.” “Policing during the pandemic changed focus a lot, there were times that they were knuckling down on drug offences, then they’d go off and work on COVID enforcement,” Fitzgerald said.
