The grants come by way of the Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost-saving Transportation (PROTECT) Discretionary Grant Program, which in part aims to save states money on future maintenance and reconstruction needs.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Over a year after Typhoon Merbok made landfall in Western Alaska, remnants of the storm’s impacts can still be found in villages like Elim, Golovin, Koyuk and Hooper Bay.
In a press release on Thursday, the Biden and Harris administration announced the Alaska project recipients of transportation grants totaling $50.7 million, which includes work in the aforementioned communities. — five in Alaska — that are part of the federal government’s attempts to strengthen transportation systems’ defense against future climate change-related impacts.
In the release, the Biden administration says the funding will offer relief to taxpayers and bolster communities’ bridges, roads, ports, rail and other infrastructure to make them better stand up to “extreme weather events worsened by the climate crisis, flooding, sea-level rise, heat waves, and other disasters.”
