Second-ranked Canadian women’s rugby team gearing up for big year, including World Cup in England
It’s a big year for coach Kevin Rouet and the second-ranked Canadian women’s rugby team, with the World Cup looming in late August. Canada 's Alysha Corrigan, right, tries to elude Ireland's Fiona Tuite during WXV 1 women's rugby union action, in Langley B.C., on Oct. 5, 2024.It’s a big year for the Canadian women’s rugby team, with the World Cup set to kick off in August in England.
The Canada women have gone 10-5-0 since that World Cup with four of the losses to England and one to New Zealand. The depth of the squad has grown under Rouet, as shown by the team’s success in the absence of talismanic captain Sophie de Goede, a former World Player of the Year nominee who is recovering from knee surgery. The 25-year-old backrower from Victoria is targeting her return at the end of May so will likely not be part of the Pacific Four.“It’s going to be a tough selection at the end.
Rouet likely won’t get his players together until April, with most playing their club rugby in England or France. “I think it’s going to be a good preparation. I just need to make sure that the final details are on point,” said Rouet.
