A new proposal cosigned by stars including Clooney, Ben Affleck, and Scarlett Johansson would eliminate the current $1 million cap on SAG dues, allowing Hollywood’s top earners to contribute more to the union potentially offsetting costs from the AMPTP.
The new proposal was reportedly raised by Clooney and other A-listers including Emma Stone, Ben Affleck, Tyler Perry, and Scarlett Johansson, after a small group of them met with SAG leadership via Zoom on Tuesday to discuss why negotiations with the AMPTP had stalled. The proposal would reportedly be used primarily to bolster health benefits and other contentious areas in the union’s negotiations with the AMPTP. As of now, SAG-AFTRA has a $1 million cap on membership dues.
That proposal would see that the lowest names on the call sheet would be the first to receive residuals. Clooney confirmed the proposal to Deadline, adding that “A lot of the top earners want to be part of the solution.” “We’ve offered to remove the cap on dues, which would bring over $50 million to the union annually,” he said. “Well over $150 million over the next three years. We think it’s fair for us to pay more into the union.
