Researchers say a warmer ocean will likely result in the death of hundreds of thousands to millions of marine birds.

However, between 2014 and 2019, there were five mass die-offs. During these events the birds died of disease or starvation, which scientists link to the warmer ocean.Article content Remi Torrenta, the B.C. project coordinator for Birds Canada, said when they find a dead bird that is not too decomposed they send it for a necropsy, and this is how they know how the bird died.

The researchers say prolonged ocean warming can also change the type, abundance and nutritional value of seabirds’ prey.
