While a giant in the American judiciary, Marshall also was a longtime slaveholder.
The trustees’ Academic Affairs and Student Success Committee will take up the issue on Wednesday. It could forward its recommendation to the full board of trustees, which meets Thursday.
The next time diplomas will be awarded bearing the name of the law school will not take place until May 2023. Similar petitions were sent to the University of Illinois Chicago’s John Marshall Law School and Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. UIC dropped John Marshall’s name. Atlanta has not. “In a majority-minority city, the Marshall name does not represent the community of Cleveland,” the Ad Hoc committee wrote in its final report. “The petition from the community and from our students to drop the name Marshall from the Law School is in keeping with continuing work to acknowledge the evil of slavery, the diversity and inclusion goals outlined [by the university] and the university’s commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and Inclusion for all members of our community.
“If Louis Stokes and his brother, Carl, are not the embodiment of what this Law School is all about, then no one is,” Billups wrote. “Both brothers were trailblazers and helped open the door and create a path for many Black lawyers and politicians to come.”
