The New York Times broke down 15 regional styles of hot dogs across the U.S. Cleveland's hearty Polish Boy was an important highlight on the list.
The Polish Boy is usually made with a kielbasa rather than an all-beef frank, which is what makes our city’s signature dog distinct. The sausage is loaded with coleslaw, French fries, and barbecue sauce for a massive feast. It’s messy and rough around the edge, but also comforting and hearty — which could be a good way to describe the resilient Clevelanders who dine on it.
Other styles of hot dogs that received similar recognition include Cincinatti’s cheese coney, typically topped with skyline chili, and Michigan’s Coneys, which are topped with chili, mustard, and raw white onion. In total, Cleveland was one of the 15 styles of hot dogs that received a shout-out.The origins of the Polish Boy can be murky, but it’s definitely been a staple in Cleveland for decades.
