“It’s a very big deal for us, because we never had a team that has qualified in our existence of being the Ice Storm,” said Cleveland Ice Storm Club Director Liz Smith, who coaches the Juvenile Team.
That moment took place in January when the Juvenile Team -- featuring 18 skaters ranging in age from 9 to 13 from the West Side of Cleveland -- made nationals at a qualifying event in Rockford, Ill. “I moved here from Chicago for this job in 2017 when we only had 60 skaters,” Smith said. “Now, six years later, we’re double the size and doing even better, with nine teams this year.
