As more states ban abortion, the letter says, abortion will continue to be available to wealthy women, while poor women will often lack the necessary resources for travel to other states — and women of color are more likely to live in poverty.
IndyStar Statehouse reporter Kaitlin Lange explains the proposed abortion ban and other details about special session beginning July 25.A group of faculty, staff members and students from Indiana’s colleges and universities are calling on Indiana lawmakers to reject the abortion restrictions they are meeting in special session to consider – decrying what the group says is “a clear example of systemic racism.
Poor and lower-income women, who are more likely to be women of color, will no longer be able to decide not to have a child should they become pregnant, said Linda Johnson, an associate faculty member in the school of education at IUPUI. Restricting abortion rights would exacerbate existing inequalities and widen gaps between the rich and poor and between people of color and their white counterparts.
At an anti-abortion rally at the Indiana Statehouse Tuesday, Angela Minter, founder of the Kentucky-based anti-abortion group Sisters for Life, said that abortion is not the answer to poverty. The Indiana Black Legislative Caucus has also raised concerns about the disproportionate effect abortion restrictions would have on Hoosiers of color.
“Black women in this country already face inadequate access to medical care,” Shackleford said. “Forced births – coupled with the fact that Indiana lacks the proper social infrastructure to care for the children and families already living here – will have drastic consequences for women.”
