Clare karate athletes Dorian Thibault and Denise Thibault will be competing at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in P.E.I. from Feb. 18 to March 5. CONTRIBUTED - ContributedCHURCH POINT, N.S. — When the sport of karate makes its debut at the 2023 Canada Winter Games, two members of the Bushino Ki Karate Club in Clare will be there competing.
“It feels like a great accomplishment to attend the Canada Winter Games,” says Denise. “I'm excited to participate; the nerves haven't kicked in yet, but I'm sure they will be closer to the competition. I'm determined to give it my all in these next couple of months of training and when attending the competition.”
“I have been training them for many years to be able to improve their skills to be able to compete at a national level in the hopes that they can continue their success. Aside from training at the dojo, we have put many hours of extra training at home,” says Deveau. Having karate added to the Canada Winter Games is such a big stepping zone, says Deveau, saying it means a lot to have karate recognized as a Canada games sport.
“The desire to keep improving is what keeps me in karate,” says Denise. “As a provincial team athlete, the discipline I follow is to always do my best during training and to keep improving every step of the way. I have learned many skills that help me succeed during my fights. It takes a lot of dedication in the sport of Karate."
