Civilian Police Review Board member's remarks calling officers 'oppressors' raise questions
Chief Elaine Bryant has since issued a pre-recorded video statement saying the officer, who is a member of special"dialogue team" designed to use dialogue to help build relationships with various groups and defuse tense situations, was acting in that capacity and not showing partiality to one group or the other. Bryant acknowledged the optics of the situation were not great, however, when she said that the situation would be used as a learning tool moving forward.
On Wednesday morning, Jackson told The Dispatch she was unaware of Aragon's comments on social media at the time of Tuesday's meeting and was alerted to them afterwards. She said she anticipated the board would have to discuss the situation at their next meeting, scheduled for Jan. 10. Aragon said during the meeting that he did not anticipate that his subcommittee of the board would review the Inspector General's investigation into the officers' actions.
The review board was approved by voters in 2020 and is designed to provide oversight to investigations into alleged police misconduct. The board may make recommendations about policy changes or discipline, but those decisions have to be made by the public safety director.Mikayla Denise, one of the performers who planned to participate in the Holi-Drag event, told The Dispatch on Tuesday night that she had been working with the Red Oak school for several years on drag story hours.
