The jury heard closing arguments until just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, then went home for the day. Deliberations are scheduled to resume Wednesday morning.
The trial was the first time the Dallas police officers present the night Timpa died on Aug. 10, 2016, publicly talked about what happened that night and in the years since. It was also the first time the officers spoke directly to Timpa’s family. Medical science has been center stage in the trial as both sides disputed Timpa’s cause of death. The city of Dallas, which represents the officers, said he died of cardiac arrest and his “secret life” of drug and alcohol abuse and heart conditions contributed. Attorneys for the Timpas argued he died of positional asphyxia — or when someone is unable to breathe because of their position — due to the officers’ force.
