City says widening Country Hills Boulevard will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, one expert skeptical yyc

“In the study area, we expect a 6% increase in traffic volumes and 5% increase in greenhouse gas emissions, though per vehicle greenhouse gas emissions will be slightly reduced,” read the briefing.

The City of Calgary is considering widening Country Hills Boulevard N.E. to six lanes in certain sections where it narrows to four lanes like this section just west of Deerfoot Trail.“This traffic shift results in less traffic and less congestion in other areas, which in turn decreases overall/city-wide emissions,” read the city’s statement.

“I think if you’re just looking at directly before and then directly after you can kind of make that case,” said Tremblay. “But what it ignores is that adding more lanes in the long term adds more cars.”
