Instead of paying parking fines, violators with expired parking for less than 30 minutes will be given courtesy tickets encouraging them to donate to local charities.

The City of Victoria has shifted into the festive season by gifting select parking violators the opportunity to forgo paying fines in hopes they’ll donate to local charities.

Between Dec. 16 and 24, parking ambassadors will place these tickets on vehicles with parking that has expired for less than 30 minutes, the spokesperson says.“Instead of having a parking ticket to pay, the driver will be invited to pay it forward by donating to a food bank or charity,” they said in an email to CHEK News.

, The Mustard Seed reported a slowdown in mailed-in donations amid the Canada Post strike, which was putting pressure on the Victoria-based organization. Meanwhile, earlier this month, the Salvation Army said holiday donations were down 50 per cent since the mail strike began.“Wishing you a fine holiday season,” the courtesy ticket reads.
