The city went ahead with plans to allow traffic on Wellington Street in front of Parliament Hill despite ongoing negotiations with the feds.

Earlier this month, CTV News reported Public Services and Procurement Minister Helena Jaczek had written to Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe requesting the city keep the street closed while the two sides discussed a purchase, but the city has proceeded with the reopening regardless.

“An important objective is to highlight and promote Parliament Hill and the entire parliamentary precinct as the seat of Canadian democracy which is open to all,” the committee’s report said. “Although we are disappointed, we respect the City of Ottawa’s decision to reopen Wellington Street to vehicles. Nonetheless, we will continue to work productively and collaboratively with the city, and other key stakeholders, on a path forward for Wellington Street that creates a safe and welcoming environment.”Article content

On Thursday, he expressed disappointment with the decision, but said he remained committed to “reimagining Wellington Street for the better.”
