The conversation is picking up around a future public art piece in downtown Oshawa. Some are criticizing the costs, while others are in favour. 'I think i
“I think it’s an expenditure that is so low on the priority that there are so many other things that I think need work,” said Councillor Brian Nicholson in an interview with Durham Radio News .
The city is commissioning a sculpture for the area of Bond Street East and Simcoe Street North, as part of the city’s centennial celebrations. The artwork will be part of a Downtown Oshawa Urban Square, which officials say will host community events.“The funding for this actually comes from a set of reserve funds,” said Giberson. “This is money that was set aside over multiple years. It’s not something that is going to be affecting the property tax levy, or some new expenditure.
Three artists have been shortlisted for the project. A special jury will weigh community feedback before recommending which artwork to choose. “If it’s always going to be about the must-haves ahead of the things-that-would-be-good-to-have, then it means we would never have nice things,” said Giberson. “We would have the inability to do things as simple as park beautification and planting flowers to increase the civic appearance. All of those things would be cut. Figuring that balancing act out is never going to be 100 per cent satisfactory to everyone, all of the time.
