The City of Edmonton has halted its plans to build a hydrogen fuel station due to budget changes that resulted in the cancellation of a hydrogen bus fleet. The demand for hydrogen fuel is currently not sufficient. The city had previously requested proposals for the construction of the fueling station, which was intended to support the hydrogen transit buses and the private transportation sector's transition to heavy-duty hydrogen vehicles. However, the project is expected to be reset rather than permanently abandoned.
The City of Edmonton paused plans to build a hydrogen fuel station , saying due to budget changes that killed the request for a hydrogen bus fleet — the demand isn't there. Sarah Ryan reports.In the fall 2023 municipal budget adjustment, there was a funding request for 40 new hydrogen fuel-cell buses. But, due to financial constraints, city council instead purchased 20 diesel buses.
At that that time, the city had sent out a request for proposals on building the hydrogen fuelling station, in collaboration with the Alberta Motor Transport Association and Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB partner Transition Accelerator.It was intended to supply fuel for the city’s now-cancelled hydrogen transit buses and the private transportation sector as it transitions to heavy-duty hydrogen vehicles.“I don’t think it’s dead forever, I think it’s just getting a reset,” said Ward pihêsiwin Coun.
