Calgarians who purchased Olympic Plaza bricks in 1988 will have the opportunity to retrieve them before construction begins in January on a project to transform the downtown park.

The city will attempt to remove the engraved bricks that line Olympic Plaza, despite previously saying the age and condition of the bricks would make it nearly impossible.Calgarians who purchased Olympic Plaza bricks in the 1980s will have the opportunity to request their engraved brick be retrieved before construction begins in January on a project to transform the downtown park.

Olympic Plaza was built to host the medal ceremonies for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, and the bricks were sold in the lead-up to the Games for $19.88. The bricks are etched with names and custom messages. Thompson said the cost to remove the bricks will depend on on how many Calgarians are interested in retrieval. The city said roughly 300 people attended an event earlier this fall to imprint their brick's engraving on a piece of paper.
