The Ottawa police budget was approved without changes Wednesday, but not without opposition.

Public presentations are not permitted at council meetings but Browne and Gauthier walked onto the council floor Wednesday to deliver their comments.

The draft budget had passed through the police services board Monday evening. It includes $359 million on the operating side after recoveries and non-tax revenues are factored in, and a $60-million capital budget for 2023 — more than $40 million of which is allocated to a new facility planned for Barrhaven, which has doubled in price since a project rethink was recommended in 2021.

“In terms of the policing, we’re heavily invested in responding to mental health calls for service,” Stubbs said. “Our members spend hours on this particular call type, not only responding, but in the hospitals.” That assessment, in turn, will determine if police are needed at all on the call, whether they need to be on standby or whether they need to take the lead.
