The Citadel Theatre in Edmonton unveiled a new mural by Métis/Cree artist Paityn Savoie on Friday, as part of the Edmonton Mural Festival and Alberta Culture Days.

The Citadel Theatre in Edmonton unveiled a new mural on Friday in conjunction with the Edmonton Mural Festival. The ceremony was attended by Indigenous Elders Jo-Anna and Dr. Jerry Saddleback, along with members of the public. The mural is located on the north exterior wall of the building and is the work of Métis/Cree illustrator Paityn Savoie, also known as WÂPOSHPYII.

Artist Paityn Savoie and Her Work

Savoie works with various mediums, including paint, print, and textiles. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Design in illustration and a minor in printmaking. Her mural was selected from more than 500 submitted artworks for the space.

The mural depicts white-tailed deer moving as a herd through prairie wildflowers. Red-winged blackbirds are pictured above them in a landscape featuring wild strawberries, blueberries, fireweed, and Alberta wild roses.

Savoie explained her inspiration for the piece, saying she looked at the surrounding landscape, local plants and animals, cultural knowledge, and the physical space itself, along with stories and knowledge shared by the Saddleback Elders. She expressed hope that the mural reminds people to take a moment out of their day to indulge in art and beauty, and that it is a piece people can pause in front of, observe, and connect with in their own way.

Savoie also has a mural on Co-Op Place in Wetaskiwin.

Citadel Theatre and Community Impact

Citadel executive director Jessie van Rijn said in a news release that at the Citadel, they have the privilege of hosting artists and their stories not only inside the building but now on it too, and that this incredible mural by Paityn Savoie brings that idea to life. Van Rijn added that the mural speaks to gathering, belonging, and connection and is a beautiful addition to the building and the shared downtown community.

The unveiling coincides with this weekend’s Alberta Culture Days. The Citadel will be hosting free, family-friendly programming on Saturday and Sunday to mark the occasion.

Edmonton Mural Festival and Alberta Culture Days

The Edmonton Mural Festival is an annual event that celebrates public art and brings together artists and communities. This year’s festival provided the opportunity for Savoie’s mural to be created and unveiled. Alberta Culture Days is a province-wide celebration of arts, heritage, and culture, taking place this weekend.

The Citadel Theatre’s free programming on Saturday and Sunday will offer families a chance to engage with the arts and celebrate the new mural. The mural is a significant addition to Edmonton’s public art scene and reflects the city’s commitment to supporting Indigenous artists and cultural expression.
