Bishop O’Dowd advances to regional semifinal with win over Valley Christian.

OAKLAND — The season for Bishop O’Dowd High hasn’t been at all what coach Malik McCord expected. The Dragons used a big third-quarter from Amaya Bonner to put some distance between themselves and Valley Christian Thursday night and held on for a 54-47 win on their home court in a second-round CIF Northern California Division I girls playoff game.Pretty heady stuff considering the only players with varsity experience going in to the season were Bonner and guard Jasmine Williams.

Bonner led all scorers with 23 points, including 14 in a 19-point third quarter in which O’Dowd turned a 19-15 halftime lead into a 38-29 lead going into the fourth quarter. Savannah Jones had 13 for O’Dowd. “When you look back at it you can always say our kids played hard, and if they do that all the time you’ve got no regrets,” McSwain said. “You leave it all out there and sometimes the shots fall and sometimes they don’t. With that kind of effort, you live with it.”

The third quarter belonged to Bonner, who nailed a pair of 3-point shots and scored inside four times for 14 out of O’Dowd’s 19 points.
