In a tragic year for the small coastal town, the basketball team is ‘grateful to provide something for the community.’

Half Moon Bay point guard Dio Lucido, right, hugs Chico’s Rashad Samuel after a regional championship game Tuesday in Chico. The day after winning the first NorCal title in school history, Half Moon Bay coach John Parsons described his mental and emotional state as “still pretty much on Cloud 9.”

“I can’t say enough about our fans,” Parsons said. “Our community is an incredible place. At Hillsdale, at Marin Catholic, at Chico we had more fans than the home team.Parsons is speaking of the“The whole community was in such a deep state of mourning,” Parsons said. “A very chaotic time.” The Cougs are led by 6-foot-8 junior Jaeden Hutchins, who scored 23 points in the NorCal championship game win over Chico.The rest of the team is decidedly on the small side.Gio Garduno-Martin, a 6-foot, 160-pound freshman, scored 15 against Chico.

The 5-10 Lucido, who had an excellent season as a football slot receiver last fall, guides the team from the point guard position
