Oakland Tech girls upset St. Mary’s-Stockton on the road, Half Moon Bay advances to CIF State final.
Oakland Tech trailed by 10 at the start of the second quarter, went up by 15 in the third quarter, saw host St. Mary’s-Stockton draw even midway through the fourth but then, undaunted, pulled away for an 82-71 victory Tuesday night in the Northern California regional championship game.
“To have a chance to win Division I, this is unprecedented,” Oakland Tech coach Leroy Hurt said. “It shows we’re doing things the right way.” St. Mary’s led 17-10 after one quarter and made it 20-10 with a 3-pointer at the start of the second quarter. Tech trailed 27-21 when it went on a 9-0 run to turn the game around. Somvichian started the run with a basket, Russell scored off a steal and on a jumper to tie the score at 27. Sellers made two free throws to give her team the lead and 6-3 freshman Jhai Johnson added another free throw.
“It still doesn’t seem real,” Half Moon Bay coach John Parsons said. “I set a lot of goals for this team but never dreamed of winning a state championship as being one of them. I hope nobody wakes me up.”
