“My Friend,” the widely anticipated collaboration between chungha_mnhent and skinnyred with burgeoning rap star pH-1, could not have come at a better time.
Released on May 30 as part of the second series of high-profile collaborations from the Korean digital series, the comforting single is about finding solace in friendship and learning to let go.
“Promise me, my friend/ If you can’t say it/ Write it down here so nobody knows/ Write it down here/ I’ll throw it away so nobody knows,” croons Chung Ha in her angelic head voice over Zion.T’s delicate, infectious synth production. Alongside its catchy beat and Chung Ha’s irresistible vocals, Zion.T’s clever songwriting skills and ability to make pain sound pleasurable make “My Friend” one of the more important, exciting releases of this year.
In the accompanying video, the 24-year-old Chung Ha leaves the elegant fierceness we've seen in “Gotta Go” and “Stay Tonight,” and relishes in her bubblegum charms and flaunts a breezy self-confidence. Meanwhile, Zion.T adds his signature quirkiness as the two playfully toss notes and papers at one another.
