Christopher Nolan appears to be starting a trend with one of his actors, creating a common thread through Tenet and Oppenheimer.

Actor Kenneth Branagh has starred in the two most recent films from esteemed director Christopher Nolan, and his roles suggest it could be the start of a new trend for the two. Branagh is perhaps best known for his efforts in adapting classic literature for the big screen. Most notably, Branagh has starred in and directed multiple Shakespeare adaptations since the 1990s, including Hamlet, Othello, and Love's Labour's Lost.

Kenneth Branagh Has Done Accents In 2 Consecutive Christopher Nolan Movies Branagh has starred in Nolan's latest two films, 2020's Tenet and his most recent release, Oppenheimer. Though different in style and tone, the films both feature Branagh doing an accent different from his own, signaling the start of an unusual trend in Nolan's films.

Though neither is an accent bad enough to ruin the movie, Branagh has been criticized for his linguistic endeavors. In a review of Oppenheimer, The Ringer deemed Branagh's "hearty" Danish accent as "ridiculous" while Slate notes that his "awesomely bad Russian accent" is the same as the one heard in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit with no improvement.

It's clear that Branagh is committed to learning new dialects in order to immerse himself in his roles. The actor and director has spoken about how moving from Ireland to England in the 1970s led him to lose his own Northern Irish accent, a development that may have helped his career and certainly shaped his identity . This perhaps goes some way to explain his interest in learning new accents to further his characters.
