ICYMI - Chris Selley: Why are we giving Canada's politicians a free pass on COVID-19?
Were it not for Quebec, Ontario would be far and away Canada’s worst performer, with 30 per cent more cases and almost three times as many deaths as the next-worst provinces: Alberta and Nova Scotia, respectively. Were it not for Andorra, Belgium and San Marino, Quebec’s COVID-19 death rate would be higher than any nation state in the world. On Monday, Legault took the bold step of removing Danielle McCann as health minister … and reappointing her as minister of higher education.
Criticizing people for having fun has clearly been an important outlet for a lot of people during this pandemic. But the first two-minute hate here in Toronto, over a congregation of hipsters at Trinity-Bellwoods Park in May,to have been associated with precisely zero cases of COVID-19. That’s not a huge surprise: Outdoor events that don’t involve singing and shouting are not considered high-risk.
The only indicators that “need attention” need it desperately, and are alarmingly basic: The goal is to turn around 60 per cent of COVID-19 tests within 24 hours. It’s at 23 per cent. This is at least an improvement from when we were hardly testing at all, but that’s ice-cold comfort.Article content continued
Relief, at least, is finally at hand: As of Wednesday, services available to Torontonians will include dining on patios, haircuts, manicures and pedicures, swimming pools, shopping malls and libraries. Tory called it a “great day for the city,” and I suppose it is. But it would sure be nice to say we beat COVID-19, rather than simply endured it, and that we’re putting our best foot forward in reopening. We are not.
If that bizarre, almost cult-like reticence leads to a stronger second wave than we otherwise would have endured, would that be enough to demand accountability from our politicians? They have far more participation medals than they deserve.
