Never mind the silliness, in May 2023, of claiming Canada could have done what Australia did. Even Australia couldn’t keep doing what Australia did. More Australians than Canadians have died of COVID-19 since May 2022, in a country of 14 million fewer people. On May 1, 2022, among Canada’s five most-populous provinces, British Columbia had by far the lowest death toll: 61 per 100,000, versus 87 in Ontario, 96 in Alberta, 130 in Manitoba and 175 in Quebec. On May 1, 2022, by my calculations, students in Vancouver had missed 41 days of in-person schooling, whereas students in Toronto had missed 107 days.
That research always hastens to note that mental-health problems don’t always manifest within three years of their trigger. But more importantly, “not causing mental health problems” isn’t — or certainly shouldn’t be — the goal of anti-lockdown measures. Novel viruses are by definition tricky to combat, but we can at least demand governments make educated epidemiological guesses, not just implement such tough-looking measures as the population is willing to tolerate.
