Maybe Trudeau doesn’t care. Or maybe he does care, but he’s barely capable even of thinking beyond symbolic gestures, let alone acting
For the rest of the time, the red Maple Leaf has been flying proudly across two of Canada’s most populous provinces, and few seemed to have noticed. When a Toronto Star reporter this week tweeted a photo of Queen’s Park on a lovely autumn morning, some respondents actually seemed surprised to see the flag at full mast — which it had been for four months.Article content
Surely no one in their right mind thinks these flag placements are an impediment to reconciliation; equally surely, no one in their right mind thinks keeping the flags at half-mast is worth a damn without some kind of concrete action, or even concrete inaction — say, not appealing the latest court ruling upholding a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal order that the feds compensate Indigenous children who were formerly in state care.
Everyone knows that if a Conservative government were appealing this decision, Trudeau and his ministers would be empurpled with indignation.
