“Not illegal” is the best we have learned to expect from Canadian politicians. What if Canadians want better?
OTTAWA — You wouldn’t know it at this year’s Manning Centre Conference, but it wasn’t long ago that Ford Nation existed at an uncomfortable arm’s length from the conservative movement.
Whenever Canadian politicians misbehave, the utterly maddening instinct is to insist on rules that would prevent future misbehaviour The patronage appointments for Friends of Ford are piling up: his campaign tour director, Ian Todd, is now trade representative in Washington at $350,000 per annum; Jenni Byrne, his first and short-lived principal secretary and former federal Conservative campaign director, now sits on the Ontario Energy Board at $197,000. Ford didn’t deny to the integrity commissioner that he had previously tried to arrange a $270,000-plus-bonus job for Taverner at the Ontario Cannabis Store.
The thing is, the Lavalin mess is casting sunlight on some corners that Liberals and Tories alike would prefer to have kept dark. God willing, Canadians will repudiate not just Trudeau but the whole system — the greasy government-corporate relationships, the wretched excesses of partisanship, the shameless use of majority power to shut down inquiries — and demand not so much a replacement prime minister as profoundly better politics and governance.
