For no good reason, during COVID-19 Torontonians are condemned to spend some or all of a summer without access to our greatest natural resource
Readers, do you fancy a laugh at Toronto’s expense? Of course you do. Gather ‘round, then, and I shall tell you a tale.
Readers, it does and it is. The Toronto Islands contain multitudes: frisbee golf, barbecues, beaches both nude and otherwise, a charmingly low-rent amusement park, and plenty of quiet spots to picnic, read, sleep, swim or paddle away an afternoon. They are a delight. What respite they could offer us during the pandemic.
At the best of times, it’s bloody weird. Right now, though, regular folks can’t get to the park at any price — because the ferries are federally regulated, and federal maritime regulations currently prohibit, until at least June 30, “operations that are discretionary in nature, such as activities related to tourism and recreation.”
