Chris Knight looks at the latest in a line of bad movies to open on the first Friday of the year
Come what may, I can confidently predict that The Grudge will be the best movie of the decade — at least, until another movie opens.
And common to many films with that year-opening pedigree, it has not been screened for critics, and is not expected to do well by them if and when they see it. The Grudge features a new director and a new cast that includes some decent names such as Betty Gilpin, John Cho, Andrea Riseborough and Jacki Weaver. But the trailer – all we have to go on – depicts a standard horror story, with people getting attacked in bathtubs, dragged across floors and followed by creepy wall-climbing ghouls.
Helping not a whit was writer Jeff Buhler when he said in an interview: “This is pushing the mythology forward while keeping the concepts and spirit of those [earlier] movies, yet finding a new way to tell a story within that world, which is exciting.”
