Chris Evans looks back on his time in the MCU and calls accepting the role of Captain America the best decision he ever made. As one of the founding heroes of the franchise, the actor played the part a total of seven times before he ended his stint through Avengers: Endgame in 2019. More than three years since he officially exited the franchise, and following several new projects outside the MCU, Evans candidly talks about what playing Steve Rogers really meant to him.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Speaking with People Magazine in light of him becoming the Sexiest Man Alive awardee of 2022, the actor admits he thinks that accepting the role of MCU's Captain America is the best decision he ever made. He shares, however, that it wasn't an easy decision to sign up a multi-film contract with Marvel Studios following his experience with Fox's Fantastic Four films.
An early risk was saying yes to Captain America. I said no to it a couple of times and was really nervous about taking the job and it ended up being the best decision of my life. I can’t even imagine what my life would’ve been like without it, so that was big risk that paid off. Oh my God, you’d be a real jerk to not enjoy it. You get paid to take care of yourself and I mean this is like what you do as a kid.
Because Evans repeatedly turned down the offer to play Steve Rogers, Marvel Studios was forced to see other actors for the role, including John Krasinski, who is currently a top fan choice to play Reed Richards in the MCU's Fantastic Four reboot. Despite this, however, Kevin Feige and his team kept coming back to Evans, hoping that he would eventually change his mind. Luckily, he did in 2010 and became a mainstay of the MCU, even serving as one of its faces alongside Downey's Iron Man.
More than three years since he exited the MCU, Evans has been busier than ever, appearing in films like The Gray Man and Pixar's Lightyear. While there's no scarcity of narrative opportunities to bring Steve Rogers back into the franchise, there's still no concrete plans for his return. That being said, since Evans admits he misses playing Captain America, Marvel Studios may be more inclined to find ways to reincorporate him back into the franchise.
