Arrests were made in only 15% of the 457 shootings reported in the Bay Area between 2018 and 2021, according to this organization’s analysis of CHP data.

Reports of brazen freeway shootings across the Bay Area have quadrupled in the last four years, the California Highway Patrol’s Golden Gate division reports — driven by surges in gang violence, road rage and access to guns., CHP detectives with the Golden Gate Division’s Special Investigations unit – made up of just nine officers – arrested two suspects in connection with separate shootings this summer.

This is somewhat unusual; arrests were made in only 15% of the 457 shootings reported in the Bay Area between 2018 and 2021, according to this organization’s analysis of CHP data. On June 14, a bullet barreled through the front windshield of a vehicle driving eastbound on Interstate 580 near Grand Avenue in Oakland. The driver and passenger were not injured.

A warrant was issued for Julaan Faison, a 24-year-old San Leandro resident, who was later arrested as the primary suspect on Aug. 16 and booked into the Santa Rita Jail. Faison was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and shooting at an occupied vehicle, according to CHP.
