Chorney-Booth: New restaurants bring both new and familiar flavours outside of downtown yyc
In the new-to-Calgary category, you’ll find Hanbo, a Korean noodle house that opened this past fall on Macleod Trail, an area with an increasingly interesting collection of Asian restaurants . Calgary has seen all sorts of new Korean restaurants pop up over the last few years, most of them built around dishes like bibimbap, Korean bbq, or gochujang-drenched fried chicken.
Kalguksu is the undisputed specialty at Hanbo – which consists of a long casual dining room with full table service – but there are a few extra dishes to supplement the soup. Guests can also try mandu, which are oversized handmade Korean dumplings filled with pork and kimchi as well as a few appetizers. There are plans to introduce more dishes in the future.

Darren Makowichuk/PostmediaIn the “new but very familiar” department, Native Tongues, the much-celebrated inner city taqueria, has expanded to a second location in Britannia Plaza. This may seem a bit deja vu, as Native Tongues’ parent company Thank You Hospitality took over the location two years ago to open its A1 Cantina.
