The University of Pittsburgh said Bing was on the verge of making a significant discovery about the coronavirus before he was found shot dead.

The pair knew each other, and police said that it was a murder-suicide resulting from"a lengthy dispute regarding an intimate partner," although authorities would not comment further about the relationship between the men.

"We will make an effort to complete what he started in an effort to pay homage to his scientific excellence," the statement said. "This seems like coming straight out of Mission Impossible. Perhaps he found out that the virus originated from an American lab," one wrote. Another wrote, according to the BBC:"A very unusual case. There are likely secrets hidden in the dark."

"Death of Bing Liu - computational systems biologist, what I am - who was studying MECHANISMS of the #CoronaVirus, what I also do - is sad & unfortunate, & raises many questions. How/why did he die? Was this a message? Should I get security?" tweeted scientist and inventor Shiva Ayyadurai to his 257,000 followers.
