Chile reportedly cancels APEC summit at which Trump and Xi were to meet
Chile has canceled the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting scheduled for next month, Bloomberg and AFP reported, citing Chilean President Sebastian Pinera. As recently as last week, the Chilean government had said it would not let violent riots derail plans to host the Nov. 16-17 meeting.
President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had been planning to meet during the summit, where it's been anticipated they would sign an interim trade deal. Protests over inequality in Chile have resulted in at least 18 dead, Reuters has reported. Chile has been dealing with riots and vandalism partly sparked by a recent metro rate hike.
