Health Canada points to waiving of label rule as Ontario MD observes ‘extremely distressing’ situation for parents.
Doctors working in packed pediatric emergency departments are encouraging Health Canada to consider creative solutions to address a shortage of pain and fever medications for children as hospitals see a surge in flu cases.
Some parents are resorting to grinding up adult pills when they can’t get the liquid or chewable versions of Tylenol, said Dr. Rod Lim, medical director for the pediatric emergency department at Children’s Hospital in London, Ont., at an Ontario Medical Association news conference on Wednesday. Lim said his hospital’s emergency department is seeing “record volumes” of patients, with an 80 to 100 per cent increase compared to traditional numbers. He said this month could be their busiest ever due to the convergence of influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus among children.
“That will certainly help with larger supplies,” Lim said. “And my understanding is that if similar exemptions can be granted to pharmacies that would alleviate some of the ability to import Tylenol and ibuprofen to pharmacies due to labelling initiatives.”
