The age group represents more than 20 per cent of daily cases, but just 12 per cent of the population, said chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam

It’s not an unexpected or surprising pattern, “given the high level of vaccination in the other age groups,” schools re-opening and the fact children under 12 are so far not eligible for inoculation against SARS-CoV-2, Tam said. Across Canada, the reproduction number — the number of people each infected person goes on to infect — remains below one, meaning the pandemic “is out of a growth pattern, nationally,” Tam said.

“I think we should move on this as quickly as possible. I think we should still do it properly, and through all the proper channels, without cutting corners,” said Arnold, a professor of medicine for McMaster University’s Michael G. De Groote School of Medicine. “Is something that we have to pull out all the stops and get this going tomorrow? I don’t feel strongly about that one.”Article content

“The key is that, in general, they have milder illnesses, but there are occasional, more rare aspects of severe outcomes,” Tam said. “But very rarely do they result in death. But any death in a young child is extremely tragic and unexpected.” Yesterday we posted a tweet in error indicating it would take months to review a submission from Pfizer BioNTech to allow the use of its Comirnaty— Health Canada and PHAC Tam blamed “bumps” in communication. “I think there was some error in that tweet, I wasn’t personally involved in that.” She said the regulatory review process needs to be respected.

Nationally, over the past week, reported daily cases averaged 2,230, across all age groups, about half what they were at the peak of the fourth wave.
