The City of Chicago faces a drastic temperature shift this weekend, transitioning from unseasonably warm temperatures to a potentially record-breaking cold snap.
Chicago is bracing for a dramatic temperature swing this weekend, with unseasonably warm temperatures giving way to a deep freeze. While Friday's forecast calls for highs in the upper 30s or even low 40s, potentially reaching the warmest point of the year so far, a wintry mix and possible snow are expected overnight Friday into Saturday morning as temperatures begin to plummet.
Temperatures will continue their descent on Sunday, dipping into the low teens and potentially even single digits for some areas. Overnight Sunday into Monday, the mercury could drop to a frigid -5 degrees, with wind chills sinking 15-25 degrees below zero across the region, according to weather models. If these forecasts hold true, these lows could be the coldest Chicago has experienced since January 16, 2024, when the temperature plunged to -7 degrees. Should the cold intensify even further, it would mark the city's coldest temperatures since December 23, 2022, when temperatures reached a bone-chilling -8 degrees. The extreme cold is prompting significant disruptions, including the cancellation of Amtrak's Empire Builder train service between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest. Both the train departing Chicago on Friday and the one departing Spokane on Saturday will not operate due to the anticipated hazardous conditions. Overnight lows on Monday and Tuesday are predicted to fall below zero, with a forecasted low of -7 degrees on Monday night. If these frigid temperatures persist, particularly on Monday and Tuesday, they could represent the coldest temperatures Chicago has endured since late January 2019. A slight respite is expected on Wednesday, with temperatures gradually returning to the 20s for the remainder of the week
