A spokesperson for the Red Cross told The Canadian Press there’s no firm start date to the agreement. In her statement, DeGiovanni outlined efforts that have been taken at CHEO to respond to the triple hit of COVID, flu and RSV that has slammed hospitals across the country: redeploying staff from surgical and medical care units; adding extra beds and workers in the hospital’s pediatric intensive care, emergency and inpatient units; and asking non-clinical staff to support clinical teams where possible.
“It has been all hands on deck at CHEO this viral season,” said DeGiovanni, who added that the support “will allow some of our redeployed staff to go back to their regular roles and ensure Team CHEO can provide the safe, world-class care that our patients deserve.” DeGiovanni said CHEO has asked for “extra support from organizations across the region to ensure our young patients and their families get the care they need,” pointing to partnerships with pediatric hospice Roger Neilson House, Ottawa Public Health and other area hospitals, from Pembroke to Kingston, for staff, equipment and patient transfers.
