The Chase Freedom Unlimited is a basic card with no annual fee that can be an important component of a successful credit card rewards strategy. Read a review on it here:
has a very simple earning structure. You’ll earn 1.5 Ultimate Rewards points for every dollar spent on the card. Chase often markets this as 1.5% cash back but the reality is that rewards are earned as Ultimate Rewards points. The initial welcome offer is 15,000 Ultimate Rewards when you spend $500 in the first 3 months of account opening. Your cash back rewards do not expire as long as your account is open.
Ultimate Rewards are one of the most valuable types of points out there, so if you want to get the most value out of your Ultimate Rewards then you’ll want to combine your Freedom Unlimited with a premium Chase card. If you only have the Chase Freedom card, you are not eligible to transfer Ultimate Rewards to Chase’s airline and hotel transfer partners. But if you also have a premium Chase card, the Ultimate Rewards points that you earn with your Freedom Unlimited can be combined with your premium Chase account and then transferred to Chase’s airline and hotel travel partners.
As an example, let’s say that you spend an average of $1,500 per month on your Freedom Unlimited card over the course of a year. That would earn you a total of 42,000 Ultimate Rewards during your first year, including the 15,000 Ultimate Reward signup bonus. These points would be worth $420 in cash back or as a statement credit, or, if you combine it with a premium card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve it would be worth $630 or more towards travel.
