CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Every day, Katie Bice of Summerside reluctantly bids her tiny seven-day old baby goodbye in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit .
“I couldn't ask for her to be in a better place. I know she is where she needs to be, and the nurses and doctors are very caring and amazing and make me and Dad feel very involved. We know everything every step of the way,” said Bice, who has a five-year-old daughter, Jordyn, at home. Merge is an initiative of Liminality Innovations Inc., a family-integrated health-care model and a new standard of care in NICUs across Canada. Under this model, NICU staff and other health-care providers have been trained to welcome families as active members of their baby’s care team while in hospital.
“If they are very sick, they are worried if the baby is going to survive, even with high tech it is critical care. The nurses and doctors know exactly what to do to help these critically ill babies.” Merge provides online modules on how to bring families close to the baby and include the parents or caregivers in taking care of the baby.
